Chemistry Professor Part of Collaborative STEM Project

Chemistry professor Dr. David Forbes has been recognized as part of a team of 10 faculty from institutions across the country who will work on the project 鈥淓stablishing a Network for Effective Interventions in STEM Classrooms: Fanning the FLAMES.鈥 The $25,000 Cottrell Scholars Collaborative award funds travel to expand and formalize a collaborative network between the team and National Science Foundation-funded experts in education and social psychology research. The goal is to increase the development and adoption of research-supported educational strategies in undergraduate science courses.
The Cottrell Scholars Program develops outstanding teacher-scholars recognized by their scientific communities for the quality of their research programs, innovation in education and potential for academic leadership. Nurturing an interdisciplinary community of outstanding teacher-scholars, the program fosters synergy among faculty at major American research universities and primarily undergraduate institutions. The Cottrell Scholars Collaborative, begun in 2011, is a cross-disciplinary network of Cottrell Scholars who work in teams on projects with potential high impact. The collaborative鈥檚 overarching goal is to improve undergraduate and graduate science education at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. Through teamwork and in partnership with national initiatives, the Cottrell Scholars Collaborative develops creative approaches to overcome traditional bottlenecks to excellence in science education.
